SUB UTOPIA EM
Press release - Saint-Etienne
The Sub Utopia EM is the latest in an acclaimed product line to bring the Utopia experience to multichannel systems. The Sub Utopia EM primarily owes its extraordinary performance to incorporating the EM drive- unit technology from the Grande Utopia EM. This, and thanks to a design that is both original and radical, results in a product that is fully compatible with all models in the Utopia III range and compatible too with the spirit of the Utopia III concept.
Accurate low frequency performance is vital to the experience of music and audio visual programme, and a loudspeaker’s ability to reproduce the dynamic nuances of sounds are fundamentally linked to its capacity to react rapidly. Whether on stereo music or on Blu-ray with HD audio, the density and complexity of low frequency information and energy is considerable. Lack of cone rigidity, excessive moving mass and magnet systems that lack sufficient power to produce the necessary cone acceleration often combine to impair low frequency dynamics and detail. With its lightweight “W” composite cone construction and electro-magnet system, the Sub Utopia EM is fully equipped to reproduce with absolute fidelity any low frequency programme thrown at it.
The Sub Utopia EM subwoofer incorporates the EM technology, first seen in the Grande Utopia EM low frequency drive-unit and then in that of the Stella Utopia EM. Instead of a traditional permanent magnet, the low frequency drive-unit employs an immensely powerful electro-magnet, with a 24kg copper voice-coil, to create performance beyond anything previously achieved. For example, the electromagnet system gap flux density of 1.75 Tesla is approximately twice the value of a typical conventional low frequency drive-unit. The EM drive-unit’s dynamic performance is just as spectacular.
The ultra-powerful magnetic field allows the use of a very long 113/16”(46mm) voice-coil in such a way that it can never emerge from the magnetic gap. This solution thus avoids a sudden drop in force factor (Bl) in the voice-coil when the latter emerges from the magnetic gap, and from there, the significant rates of distortion that result from these non-linearities. Result: the subwoofer cone allows a considerable linear excursion of 17/16”36mm with significantly reduced distortion levels, even (especially!) at very high levels.
The “stackable” subwoofer
The 13” (33cm) “W” cone driver of the Sub Utopia EM drive-unit is slightly less than the 153/4” (40cm) Grande Utopia EM low frequency driver. However within the type of multi-channel system for which it is intended, accompanied perhaps by the Viva Utopia, a larger diameter drive-unit would be more difficult to integrate – particularly in view of the Viva Utopia 81/4” (21cm) drive-units.
For higher performance systems however the solution is simply to multiply the number of subwoofers to provide greater cone area. The Sub Utopia EM was therefore designed from the start to enable a subwoofer stack, up to three units high, to be created. The cone area of a three Sub Utopia EM stack is approximately twice the cone area of a single Grande Utopia EM low frequency drive-unit. This is an ideal cone area ratio to ensure that the two systems integrate correctly. Multiple subwoofer integration also holds with two subwoofers for the Stella Utopia EM or the Maestro Utopia, and one subwoofer for the rest of the loudspeakers in the Utopia 3 range. However for very high power needs, notably the case for a top level multi-channel systems, the use of multiple subwoofers instead of a single one is always beneficial from a dynamics point of view.
The use of several stacked subwoofers is not only beneficial in terms of dynamics. The presence of multiple radiation points along a single axis offers the advantage of smoothing the in-room low frequency response as each loudspeaker excites the resonance modes of the room differently. Room response non-linearities are thus mitigated without any need for active equalisation.
Two versions of the Sub Utopia EM subwoofer are available: the Sub Utopia EM/T (Top) which incorporates a smooth top surface to allow its use as the top unit in a stack, and the Sub Utopia EM/S (Stackable) whose top surface incorporates features to enable secure stacking.
Just like the cinema !
Despite its remarkable performance the Sub Utopia EM is a traditional passive speaker designed for ease of installation. Multi- channel systems of the caliber appropriate to the Sub Utopia EM are usually based on rack-mounted power amplification and control electronics, so the use of a passive subwoofer, with control at the equipment rack rather than hidden on the rear of the product, is far more convenient for installation and setup. Just as in the cinema.
Power amplifier ratings of 500 to 1000 Watts per subwoofer are appropriate to optimise amplifier and speaker matching. With a sensitivity of 93dB for 2.83V at 1m, and power handling of nearly 1000 Watts, the maximum sound pressure level of the Sub Utopia EM can exceed 120dB at 1m. With a cut-off frequency of -6dB at 19Hz, the Sub Utopia EM is able accurately to reproduce the low frequency elements of any programme material at almost any level. Simple specification however can never express the exceptional dynamics and speed of the Sub Utopia EM.
Új Focal fejhallgató, az első és valószínűleg nem az utolsó, a cég története során.
Focal adds to its sonic legacy with high fidelity headphones. The first model of this new family, the Spirit One, is a closed type headphone, light and highly accessorized. With its sleek and luxurious design, its performance honoring all the brand standards, the Spirit One is ready to hit the streets and living rooms.
The launch of the Spirit One headphone fits perfectly with the brand strategy: to offer a true quality sound wherever it is necessary. After bringing quality music to the home and to studios and communities with the loudspeaker, and to the car with world-renowned speakers, the headphone was the missing link between these different worlds. Two years of hard work were necessary for Focal to develop and shape the Spirit One, to acquire all the necessary skills to master the delicate art of the high fidelity headphone. The goal was not to launch one more headphone onto the market, but to create a sophisticated sound object, of the highest quality, immediately identifiable as a Focal product in itself. So we had to manufacture a product fully designed and developed by our R&D team in Saint-Etienne. In a highly competitive market, but with strong growth, where the number of competitors with doubtful pedigree continues to increase, and where the headphone is often limited to a fashion accessory, Focal offers a leading product with all the legitimacy that such a sound specialist can summon.
The Focal touch
Focal played the card of modernity at the outset by opting for the portable approach, in the strict sense of the term. The Spirit One is a headphone that you can listen to anywhere: in the street, while commuting, or at home. The presence of the aluminum iPhone remote control integrated into the minijack cable is the most evident expression of this approach. Besides the ability to manage calls, it controls the essential functions of the music player from Apple ® (Ready for iPod, iPhone, iPad): volume, play, pause, previous track or next track. Finally, an adapter can disable the remote when the Spirit One is used with a non-compatible smartphone. Many accessories are standard with the Spirit One to extend the listening pleasure in all situations: minijack/jack adapter (3.5mm / 6.35mm) for home listening, airplane connector, soft transport cover, detachable anti-winding cord, not to mention that the headphone comes in a deluxe rigid storage case. But the key to a mobile headphone is of course its light weight. At only 225g, obtained with an ultra-light aluminum structure, silky touch ABS shells (soft touch coating), the Spirit One is simply pleasant to wear, without the fatigue generally caused by a headphone’s weight. These choices of materials also give it a plush aspect: modern without falling into unpractical fashion excess. Comfort has been especially studied for the circum-aural coupling around the ear, to ensure a pleasant contact and the proper seal required to operate a closed headphone.
The Spirit of Sound
By calling its headphone Spirit One, Focal is committed to the path of “The Spirit of Sound”; that is to say, be respectful to the music – all types of music. This commitment implicitly dispels any use of an easy sound, with a falsely dramatic nature, supported by a “physiological” response curve, with bloated bass and hollowed midrange. Respectful sound is a sound that reproduces all the instruments with the right tonal balance, and with the dynamics that characterize each of them. The choice of 40 mm diaphragms (mylar / titanium), through extensive listening sessions, meets the technical standards displayed by Focal on our drivers: stiffness and lightness, to obtain respectively, a pure sound free of distortion right down to the sub bass, and a maximum dynamic range due to a high efficiency.
All our know-how has been focused on dozens of interacting parameters – such as on a loudspeaker, but moved to other technical points – to achieve the ideal response curve. The ovoid shape of the shells and the choice of materials are important elements to be taken in consideration, as they influence sound reproduction. In line with Focal tradition, the result is a sound that meets our goals: honest, full... The true sound. Sound quality is also a matter of environment, and listening in the street or on public transport exposes the listener to outside noise that will directly affect sound reproduction. Choosing a circum-aural type closed headphone resting on the skull around the ear was therefore the most logical choice to remain faithful to accurate and undisturbed sound.
